Why Light Commercial Vehicles Fail Roadworthy Inspections

If you drive a ute, limousine, or small commercial truck, you’ll need a VIC roads Roadworthy Certificate in the same situations as any car including when you're selling, re-registering, or transferring ownership. But passing the inspection isn’t always straightforward, especially for modified or heavily used vehicles.

At JAF Autos in Hoppers Crossing, we’re VicRoads-licensed to issue roadworthy certificates for both standard and light commercial vehicles. Our inspections are fast, fair, and fully compliant with current road safety regulations and we’ve got the tools and experience to deal with heavier, customised setups.

What Is a Light Commercial Vehicle?

Light commercial vehicles typically include:
  • Utes (tradies, dual cabs, flatbeds)
  • Vans (delivery and transport)
  • Small trucks (under 4.5 tonnes)
  • Stretch limousines (modified sedans and wagons)

Even if your vehicle looks road-ready, it still needs to meet VicRoads safety standards and common wear points or non-compliant mods can lead to an instant fail.

Why Light Commercial Vehicles Fail RWCs

Here are the most common reasons light commercial vehicles fail roadworthy inspections:

1. Brake Imbalances or Worn Pads

Heavy-duty use means increased brake wear. If there’s a noticeable difference between left and right braking force, or the pads are below spec, you’ll fail.

2. Suspension and Shock Wear

Utes and small trucks often carry loads that wear out springs, bushes, and shock absorbers faster than normal passenger vehicles.

3. Tyre Defects

This includes uneven tread wear, under-inflated tyres, or tyres that don’t match the load rating required for your vehicle type.

4. Steering Play or Misalignment

Even minor steering free play can pose safety risks, and it’s a common failure point in well-used vans and utes.

5. Unapproved or Non-Compliant Modifications

If you’ve added lift kits, chassis mods, aftermarket lighting, or other upgrades, they must comply with VicRoads and VASS guidelines. We often see vehicles fail due to unapproved modifications.

What About Modified Vehicles?

Thinking of presenting a stretched limo or kitted-out tradie ute for inspection? Make sure your modifications:
  • Were professionally installed
  • Meet engineering requirements
  • Are backed by documentation
JAF Autos can advise before your test if you're unsure about a particular mod or setup. We’ve seen everything from raised suspensions to repurposed passenger vans — and we know what will (and won’t) pass.
